School Activities

Activity: Planting a School Garden- We have done a lot of work to reclaim the garden and have much knowledge and many of the requisite materials in place to re-launch the garden.

Implementation of activities at the school: We chose to use the grant to purchase plant starts to revitalize our school garden. We prepared the gardens and then did daily lessons with our camp students July 4-8 and again July 11-15. Students learned about native plants and how to care for and water the garden. They also harvested vegetables and herbs to be used.

Other interesting facts about the school: The school was founded thirty years ago to provide outstanding environmental education to students in the local community.  85% of the students are local and receive some amount of scholarship to attend the school. The other 15% are foreign students whose touition helps offest the cost of school for local students.

Messages from the ground

"I like to work in the garden because the vegetables I grow are the most delicious!"- Ori, 5 years old; "My mom said we can plant a garden like this at our house." - Simon, 5 years old; "It's important to take care of the garden so that we can eat the food.  We feed the scraps to the chickens so that they have healthy food too to give us eggs.  The butterflies come to the garden to pollonate the flowers, sometimes even bats come at night to pollonate.  The garden is for everyone!" - Mateo, 9 years old
