School Activities

Activity: Activity 3.1from the Swarovski Waterschool Teaching and Learning Material: Making water safe to drink

Implementation of activities at the school:  Explained the importance of drinking clean water. With the lack of filtered water running through their taps, they were taught the importance of filtering and boiling all drinking water. The main source of drinking water in the nearby villages and school taps are rainwater and nearby streams and creeks. This water is collected in a water dam and in water tanks and runs straight through the taps. The importance of water and the Swarovski Waterschool video was shown to the student and then class discussions on their understanding of the video was shared before Activity 3.1 was carried out. After the activity was carried out, the students did a short presentation on what they learnt through the activity and explained why their tap water would need filtration and boiling.

Other interesting facts about the school: Rara District School is located in Naitasiri, which is nested within the highlands of the main island in Fiji, Viti Levu. It was established in 1967 to cater for the three villages within the Rara district, namely Naluwai, Waidracia and Nasavu. The school is situated between the three villages and currently has a total of 165 students. It consists of a kindergarten with students at the age of 5 and a primary school with students between the age of 6 and 13 years (year 1 to year 8). Due to the shortage of rooms, years 5 and 6 share a classroom and a teacher - otherwise each class has its own classroom and class teacher.

Messages from the ground
"I just learnt that it doesn't take much to get clean drinking water - we can use basic materials like a strainer and a piece of cloth to filter water and the firewood we have for cooking, to boil the water", Apenisa Radamanu

"Today I learnt that water tanks are dirty and need to be cleaned after some time and that we always have to save as much water as we can because sometimes we run low on water when there are droughts", Naina Babakula

"Our main sources of water are rain and streams", Sainiana Tinai

"It wasn't until after this activity that I learnt that we really need to filter and boil all our drinking water to remove dirt and kill germs.", Nathan Chand
